Honey Doubanjiang Noodles combine spicy fermented bean paste with honey, sesame, and green onions. It’s a perfect lazy-day meal!


Here I go again with the noodle cravings. My body was begging for rest, yet my mind couldn’t stop thinking about cooking something to satisfy that craving. In the end, I made this noodle recipe. With just a handful of ingredients, this is the ultimate lazy-day meal.

The star of this dish is doubanjiang, a spicy fermented bean paste that gives the noodles their bold, savory flavor. Its richness is balanced with a touch of honey, creating a sweet-and-spicy combination that makes every bite irresistible. I’m not even exaggerating.

Where to Find Doubanjiang?

If you want to make this recipe at home, you’ll need some doubanjiang. You can usually find it in Asian grocery stores, often in the sauce or condiment aisle. For convenience, it’s also available online through specialty stores or marketplaces. I recommend looking for Pixian doubanjiang, the traditional Sichuan variety, for the most authentic flavor.

Key Ingredients

Noodles. I didn’t have noodles on hand when I first made this, so I used pasta instead, and it works just as well. Anything that can hold the sauce will do.

Ground Pork. I suggest using lean ground pork since doubanjiang already brings a lot of richness to the dish. This keeps it from feeling too heavy.

Doubanjiang. This is what gives the dish its character. It adds a salty, slightly spicy, fermented flavor that builds the base of the sauce. Without it, the noodles would taste flat.

Honey, Soy Sauce, & Sesame Oil. These come together to balance the sauce. Honey softens the saltiness, soy sauce deepens the flavor, and sesame oil adds a light, nutty finish.

Garlic. I used a generous amount here since I love garlic. It adds aroma and makes the whole dish more satisfying.

How to Make Honey Doubanjiang Noodles

Step 1: Cook the noodles according to package instructions until tender. Drain and set aside, reserving about 1 cup of noodle water. This helps loosen the sauce later and keeps the noodles from drying out.

Step 2: In a small bowl, combine doubanjiang, honey, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix until smooth. Preparing the sauce ahead ensures the flavors are evenly balanced before cooking.

Step 3: Heat cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Avoid browning too much to keep the garlic from turning bitter.

Step 4: Add ground pork and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. This creates the savory base for the Honey Doubanjiang Noodles and helps the meat absorb the sauce better.

Step 5: Pour in the prepared sauce and stir to coat the pork evenly. Let it cook for 1–2 minutes so the doubanjiang releases its full flavor and blends with the other ingredients.

Step 6: Add the cooked noodles to the pan. Toss until fully coated in the sauce. If the mixture looks too thick, add a small amount of reserved noodle water to create a smooth, glossy coating.

Step 7: Add chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Taste and adjust salt if needed, depending on the saltiness of your doubanjiang.

Step 8: This is optional; you can add a splash of rice vinegar for a slight tang that balances the richness of the sauce.

  • 200g noodles or pasta of your choice
  • 200g lean ground pork
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1-1½ tsp doubanjiang (fermented bean paste)
  • 2 tbsp honey adjust to taste
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • sesame seeds for garnish
  • green onions chopped, for garnish
  • 1-2 tbsp cooking oil
  • rice vinegar optional

Instructions
 

  • Cook the noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside, reserving 1 cup of the noodle water for later use.
  • Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, combine doubanjiang, honey, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix well until smooth.
  • Heat cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  • Cook the protein: Add ground pork until browned. This forms the savory base for the noodles.
  • Add the prepared sauce to the pan. Stir to coat the protein evenly and let it cook for 1–2 minutes to release all the flavors.
  • Combine noodles and sauce: Toss the cooked noodles in the pan until fully coated in the spicy-sweet mixture. Add a splash of reserved noodle water for a silky consistency.
  • Finish with green onions and sesame seeds. Taste and adjust salt if needed.
  • Optional: Add a splash of rice vinegar for brightness.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

  • Ground pork: Classic choice.
  • Chicken: Lean option; cut into small pieces for even cooking.
  • Tofu: Firm or extra-firm works best; lightly pan-fry for texture.
  • Vegetables or mushrooms: For a plant-based option, use mushrooms, tempeh, or a mix of hearty vegetables.
  • Combination: Mix protein and vegetables to balance flavor and texture.

Storage and Reheating

Refrigerate properly: Store leftover Honey Doubanjiang Noodles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Proper storage keeps the sauce and noodles from drying out and preserves the flavors.

Reheat on the stove: Warm in a pan over medium heat. Add a splash of water or broth to loosen the sauce and restore the noodles’ silky texture.

Microwave tip: If using a microwave, cover the noodles and add a small amount of liquid to prevent them from drying or clumping. Stir halfway through for even heating.
